Facebook: How to Find an Audience and
Grow Your Game
To find an audience and grow your Facebook game, find a niche genre and an under-served target group, and
don't have a restrictive view of what qualifies as a game, which might exclude some potentially entertaining
interactive apps. Reach players by targeting fans of similar games through Facebook's advertising platform.
Design wall updates to be fun and informative, not spammy—updates with player customizations are good and
user-generated content is even better. Use A/B testing, but balance it with a love of games.
See Chapters 3, “Facebook Games: The Users, the Money, and the Major Players,” and 4, “Facebook Game
Design: Principles for Growth and Revenue,” for more information.
Facebook Game Design Principles
Generally, when designing games for Facebook, you'll want to design for long-term aspiration and communic-
ate to players what they can do with your game months or years down the road. Also, be sure to include daily
game features; they drive daily usage.
See Chapter 4, “Facebook Game Design: Principles for Growth and Revenue,” for more information.
Facebook Monetization Principles
Deeply integrate monetization features into your game's design, so they'll be apparent to the player from the
start, alongside all the game's other main features. Make buying virtual goods part of the first-time play experi-
ence, so players know how to spend, and make the spending experience enjoyable. Price your goods (generally)
high to start and offer discounts as needed. Functional enhancements tend to sell well, decorations not (usually)
so much.

Facebook Game Design Lessons from
KIXEYE's Paul Preece
Paul Preece of KIXEYE offers the following game design lessons:
Gameplay speed-ups monetize well, whereas nonfunctional virtual decor usually does not.
Generating an emotional response in players (positive or negative) monetizes well.
Targeted marketing through Facebook's ad platform also attracts players who monetize well.
For strong retention, design a strong meta game that has goals above and beyond the game's specific,
explicit objectives.
