into a virtual scene, which is only visible by looking “through” the display. This
introduces many new potential uses and interactions that can be integrated into
an application. For example, in an adventure game the user can move around
and gain a better view of the scene around them, potentially finding new items
that aren't visible by standing directly in front of the display.
We have taken a brief tour of the Kinect device and studied what it can do,
how we as developers connect to and use its data streams, and also some of
the interesting and novel applications that could arise from its use. There is
a vibrant development community building around the Kinect, with significant
support from Microsoft for this popular device. It remains to be seen what the
next fantastic application of the Kinect will be, but I hope that this article has
helped put the reader into the position that they can start building it!
