constraints. A possible classification of the tactile interfaces is the one related to the
domains of application. This classification has helped us to show that the majority of
the existing tactile interfaces were laboratory prototypes, often not properly completed
and certainly not adapted to mass production. Different actuation technologies have
been explored. We think it important to use these actuation technologies in a better
way, in order to exploit their optimal potential.
As regards the applications involving tactile sense in virtual reality, as we have
already indicated, very few applications use tactile interfaces. This is mainly because
presently, the user often does not feel tactile sensations when he handles objects, which
is the most common task in VR applications: in practice, he operates most easily
with a tracker, or alternatively with a force feedback interface, something which is
technically more complex. The addition of tactile sensations presently involves such
technical efforts that few VR designers dare to undertake them. Lets us hope that the
future development in commercial offers encourages VR application designers to use
this sense, which is so present in our everyday life.
